This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like typical body horror, but inside Together exists a intense examination about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A familiar narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force begins influencing the pair. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that come with most partnerships over a long period. At their core, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film actually helped them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
